about

At some point in time circa 1980, I was I was at Oasis Records engaging in one of my favorite pastimes of shopping for vinyl records. I came across a solo album by Kerry Livgren Of the band Kansas entitled "Seeds Of Change". As I was reading the songlist on the back of the cover, which also credited who the other performers were on each song (an all star cast to say the least), one name jumped out at me on two of the songs... Ronnie James Dio. At the time, Rainbow was my favorite band and Dio was my favorite singer, but I had recently been disappointed when I had bought the latest Rainbow album to discover that Dio was no longer in the band. This was also prior to the announcement that he had indeed joined Black Sabbath.

So the album was an immediate purchase and I noticed right away that all of the songs had a Christian theme and indeed Kerry had embraced Christianity. The two songs that Ronnie sang on "Mask Of The Great Deceiver" and "To Live For The King" were sang with such conviction, and the album as a whole planted "seeds of change" within my own heart and through a series of subsequent events that would be too long to go into here, I came to the knowledge of Christ as the Way, the Truth and the Life. Ironically, through his work with Black Sabbath and his own band Dio, Ronnie's persona would become one that was more often associated with the occult than with Christianity. I used to joke that if I ever got to meet Ronnie, I would thank him for the fact that he was responsible for leading me to God. Sadly that day will never come but Kerry Livggren if you read this... Thanks Brother and may Ronnie James Dio, R.I.P. This one candle - a light that's not my own.
